Why Should I Choose
K&L Full Immersion Cleaning?

Full immersion cleaning is often considered superior for area rugs, especially for delicate or high-value pieces, because it provides the most thorough and deep clean. Here’s why it stands out compared to other methods like surface cleaning or steam cleaning:

  • Deep Dirt and Dust Removal: Rugs trap dirt, allergens, and debris deep within their fibers—often beyond what vacuuming or surface cleaning can reach. Immersion allows water to penetrate every layer, flushing out embedded dirt.
  • Thorough Odor Elimination: Odors from pets, smoke, or spills can seep deep into the fibers and backing of a rug. Full immersion allows for complete saturation, breaking down and removing odor-causing particles more effectively.
  • Stain Removal Power: When the rug is fully soaked, cleaning agents can work evenly across the entire piece. This helps loosen and lift stubborn stains that other methods might only treat on the surface.
  • Preserves Fiber Health: Proper immersion cleaning (especially when done by professionals) uses gentle, rug-safe detergents that clean thoroughly without damaging delicate fibers like wool, silk, or cotton.
  • Better for Handwoven and Antique Rugs: For high-quality or antique rugs, immersion mimics traditional washing methods that were used for centuries—it's gentle and safe for natural dyes and delicate weaves.
  • Complete Rinse: Unlike steam cleaning, which can leave behind detergent residue, immersion allows for a full rinse, ensuring that no cleaning agents are left in the fibers that could attract more dirt later.

That said, immersion cleaning should always be done by professionals who understand the specific needs of different rug types, as improper soaking could damage certain materials or dyes.

Why Is Hang Drying Rugs Important?

It's important to hang dry rugs after cleaning for several key reasons:

  • Prevents Mold and Mildew: Rugs hold onto moisture really well, and if they dry too slowly or stay damp while lying flat, they can develop mold or mildew, especially in humid environments.
  • Maintains Shape: Hanging helps the rug dry evenly, preventing warping, rippling, or stretching that can happen if it's left flat on the ground.
  • Faster Drying: Air circulates better around a hanging rug, speeding up the drying process and reducing the time the rug spends wet, which is better for its fibers and backing.
  • Protects Flooring: If you leave a wet rug on a hardwood or carpeted floor, the moisture can damage the surface underneath, causing stains, warping, or even fostering mold growth beneath the rug.
  • Preserves Rug Integrity: Especially for delicate or handmade rugs, proper drying helps maintain the integrity of the fibers, dyes, and overall structure.

If you can’t hang the rug, laying it flat outside with good air circulation and flipping it periodically can also help, but hanging is definitely the best option for thorough drying.

Pet Accidents? No problem.

Professional immersion cleaning is the most effective method for resolving pet urine issues in area rugs because it fully tackles the problem at every level—surface stains, odors, bacteria, and deep fiber contamination. Here's how it works and why it’s so effective:

1. Comprehensive Inspection and Pre-Treatment

  • Professionals begin by identifying urine stains using tools like UV light (since dried urine can be invisible).
  • A specialized urine treatment solution is applied to break down the uric acid crystals that cause odors and bacteria buildup.

2. Full Immersion Bath

  • The rug is completely submerged in water, allowing cleaning solutions to penetrate deep into the fibers, backing, and foundation.
  • This method ensures that contaminants trapped deep within the rug—not just on the surface—are thoroughly flushed out.

3. Agitation and Soaking

  • During immersion, professionals use gentle mechanical agitation or hand scrubbing to loosen and remove stubborn residues, including odor-causing bacteria and urine salts.
  • Prolonged soaking allows enzymes to break down any lingering organic matter.

4. Thorough Rinsing

  • The rug is rinsed multiple times with clean water until all traces of urine and cleaning agents are completely eliminated.
  • This step is crucial for preventing future dirt attraction and odor buildup from leftover residues.

5. Professional Extraction and Drying

  • Excess water is removed using specialized equipment, which prevents stretching or damage.
  • Rugs are then hang-dried in a controlled environment with proper airflow to eliminate any remaining moisture and prevent mold or mildew growth.

6. Final Deodorization and Finishing

  • Additional odor-neutralizing treatments can be applied for particularly stubborn smells.
  • The rug is groomed and inspected to ensure it’s fully cleaned, free of odor, and restored to its best condition.

Why Is This Method Superior for Pet Urine Issues?

  • Breaks Down Uric Acid Crystals: Surface cleaning can't dissolve the tough crystals that cause lingering odors—immersion allows enzymes to work deeply and effectively.
  • Full Penetration: It reaches the backing and foundation layers, areas where urine can soak into and remain trapped.
  • Prevents Future Damage: By thoroughly removing bacteria and moisture, it prevents long-term fiber degradation, odors, and mold growth.

Why to Trust Your Experts at K&L for Stain and Spot Removal:

As professional rug cleaners, we follow a systematic, multi-step process to effectively remove spots and stains from your area rugs without damaging delicate fibers or dyes. Here’s how we do it:

1. Initial Inspection and Fiber Testing

  • Thorough examination of the rug to identify the type of stain (organic, oil-based, dye, etc.).
  • Conduct tests to determine the rug’s fiber type (wool, silk, synthetic, etc.) and colorfastness (to ensure dyes won’t bleed).

2. Pre-Treatment of Stains

  • Apply a targeted pre-treatment solution designed for the specific stain type: Protein-based stains (urine, blood, food): Enzymatic cleaners break down organic matter. Oil-based stains (grease, cosmetics): Solvent-based treatments dissolve oils. Tannin stains (coffee, wine): Acidic spot removers neutralize discoloration.
  • Let the solution dwell for a few minutes to break down the stain without damaging the fibers.

3. Gentle Agitation

  • Professionals gently agitate the stain using soft brushes or microfiber pads to loosen the particles.
  • This step helps dislodge stains that have settled deep into the fibers.

4. Rinsing and Extraction

  • Use specialized extraction equipment to rinse and remove the cleaning agents and stain residues.
  • For delicate rugs, they might use a low-moisture rinsing system to prevent over-wetting, which could damage sensitive materials.

5. Deep Cleaning (If Needed)

  • For stubborn stains, the rug may undergo full immersion cleaning to flush out any remaining residue from the foundation and backing.

6. Controlled Drying Process

  • The rug is dried using professional drying equipment or hung in a climate-controlled environment to prevent water damage or color bleeding.

7. Post-Cleaning Treatment

  • Apply specialized stain protectants (like Scotchgard) to help prevent future staining.
  • Perform a final inspection to ensure all spots and stains have been properly treated and the rug is restored to its best condition.

Why Are Professionals More Effective?

  • Specialized Products: We use industrial-grade, fiber-safe products designed for specific stains.
  • Advanced Equipment: Professional machines extract more dirt and moisture than consumer-grade tools.
  • Expert Knowledge: We understand how different fibers and dyes react to various treatments, minimizing the risk of damage.

Prolong the Life of Your Rugs.

A professional application of fiber protectant provides a powerful layer of protection for area rugs by creating an invisible barrier around each fiber. This barrier helps repel liquids, dirt, and stains before they can penetrate the fabric and cause permanent damage. Here's how it works and why professional application is especially effective:

How K&L Fiber Protection Protects Your Rug

  • Forms an Invisible Barrier When applied, Scotchgard bonds to the individual fibers of the rug, coating them with a microscopic layer that doesn’t affect the look, feel, or breathability of the material.
  • Repels Liquids The protective layer causes spills (like water, wine, coffee, or pet accidents) to bead up on the surface instead of soaking into the fibers. This gives you time to blot up spills quickly before they become permanent stains.
  • Prevents Dirt from Embedding Dust, dirt, and debris are less likely to cling to fibers, making regular vacuuming more effective. Helps prevent the buildup of grime that can wear down fibers over time.
  • Reduces Absorption of Oils Rugs naturally attract body oils, cooking grease, and pet oils—Scotchgard minimizes how much these substances absorb into the rug, keeping it cleaner for longer.

Why K&L's Professional Application Is Superior

  • Even and Thorough Coverage Professionals use commercial-grade equipment to apply fiber protectant evenly across every fiber, ensuring consistent protection—something that's hard to achieve with DIY sprays.
  • Stronger, Longer-Lasting Formula Professional products are typically more concentrated and durable than over-the-counter versions, offering longer-lasting protection.
  • Expert Knowledge Technicians adjust the application method based on your rug's fiber type (wool, silk, synthetic) to avoid damage or discoloration.
  • Proper Drying and Curing Rugs are dried and cured in controlled conditions, ensuring the protective layer sets properly without residue or streaks.

Benefits of Our Professional Fiber Protectant Application

  • Extends the life of your rug by preventing fiber damage from dirt and spills.
  • Makes routine cleaning and vacuuming more effective.
  • Helps maintain the rug’s appearance by preventing stains from setting.
  • Reduces the frequency of deep cleaning needs.

The Best Cure for Insect Damage is Protection.

Moths and carpet beetles are a major concern when found in wool rugs. The damage is done when the moth is in the larvae stage. The larvae feed on protein (wool, silk, animal hair), lay eggs in the rug and the cycle continues. We offer a product that will act as a deterrent to them and actually makes the rug bitter to their taste. This process is very important before storing rugs. We also provide a service that will decontaminate the rug from existing moth or insect eggs and larvae. While there are no guarantees written or implied that insects will never return, cleaning and treatment is the best method to combat this problem.

Our Years of Experience Equals Quality Results
For Your Rugs

When you hire an experienced carpet cleaner, you get the job done right the first time! Through our tested and proven cleaning process, we’ll help you keep your home pristine and beautiful! See our multi-step (no short cuts) process below:

01

Inspect & Quality Pre-treat

This is not a templated approach. We know every single rug is unique. We’ll work with you to inspect and ensure the most appropriate cleaning solutions for you.

02

Full-Immersion Cleaning

We only use tested and approved products and equipment. And most importantly, we perform a thorough full immersion cleaning. This is the only way to deep clean area rugs. Rug fibers are dense and hold more dirt and residue than a typical carpet. A full immersion cleaning will safely flush these fine residues from both the front and the back of the rug.

03

Spot Treatments

Most dark spots that look like stains can be removed with our process or with a few additional steps.

This is another reason to only hire experienced professional rug cleaners with several years of experience (we've been doing this as a company for more than 25 years). We know how to remove those stubborn spots without causing damage or discoloration to your fine rugs.

04

Hang to Dry

Many carpet cleaning companies want to clean your rugs in your home while they are already there because it is quick and convenient. The problem with this method is that they are only cleaning the surface. And leaving it to dry on the floor.

The most appropriate way to clean a rug is to clean it entirely (front and back) and to hang it to dry. This process involves more time and labor, but is definitely worth it!

If your rug is not wool and could use a quciker onsite cleaning, we provide that service, too. With K&L, you get the best of both worlds simply because we are willing to do it.

05

Optional Fiber Protection & Repairs

If we see worn out areas damaged by high traffic and abrasive residue, we will recommend and quote you for a protectant application.

On the same token, if we see areas of damage or concern with your carpet, we won't just clean and get out of there to the next job. We will assess the situation and provide you with our recommendations and a genuine quote to get the job done for you.

And if the carpet is beyond repair or protection, we'll tell you that, too. We are your trusted carpet care experts!
